Phulourie (pronounced pooh-lore-ie)(click here for printable recipe)
2 cups yellow split peas, soaked overnight
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons roasted jeera (cumin) powder
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 Scotch Bonnet pepper, finely chopped
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup water
Drain the soaked peas and grind them well in a food processor, about 5 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine peas with the rest of the ingredients, except the water and the oil.
Add water and mix well until a thick batter is achieved.
Heat a pot with enough oil for deep frying.
Add spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil.
Fry until golden brown on all sides. Drain on paper towels.
Serve with tamarind chutney.
