In this smoothie, naturally sweet fruit, in combination with whole grains, lowfat dairy and a protein punch make this a healthier alternative than the sugar packed smoothies, readily available at your favorite chain store.

8 pitted dates
1/3 cup oat bran
1 cup 2% lowfat milk
1/2 pineapple, chopped
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 scoop protein powder
2 teaspoons flaxseed
1 teaspoon wheat germ
Soak oat bran and dates in milk overnight. This is what it will look like the morning, almost like a porridge as the oat bran will have absorbed much of the milk.
The next morning, place the flaxseed in a blender and grind them. (I used the ice crush button on my blender).
Add all other ingredients and blend well, until a homogenous smoothie is achieved.
The key is to use very ripe fruit so that the only sweetener needed is the natural sugar from the fruit. It is filling and can serve as breakfast, without other accompaniments. Thick, creamy and fruity, it is very satisfying. While healthy, it is still sweet & delicious - perfect for adults and kids alike!
